Who we are

How we work

Founded 30 years ago by returned volunteers, VST raises funds from individuals, groups, trusts and public bodies. We work in partnership with an Indian organisation, Development Action Consortium Trust, and a network of eight NGOs in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Our efforts are focused on community organisations, including more than 1,200 women's self-help groups, HIV+ people’s associations, Dalit activist groups, and panchayat solidarity groups. Our activities cover micro-credit, micro-enterprise, women's rights, political rights for the poor, human rights for Dalits, and vulnerability to HIV/Aids.

Where we work

VST works mostly in Theni district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Theni is on the western border of Tamil Nadu, nestled against the Western Ghats mountain range that runs down the spine of India. More than a million people live there, about a quarter of them below the poverty line. Some 70 per cent are literate.

Who we work with

In order to achieve the greatest possible improvement in the lives of the people we work with, VST partners with experienced, stable and committed organisations regarded as experts in their fields by the Indian government, UK and European funders and other NGOs.

History

VST was formed to support work that Dora Scarlett founded and inspired. She opened her clinic near Aundipatty in Theni District in 1962 and several of those who worked with her - local people and volunteers from across the world - went on to start other organisations, including VST and some of its partner bodies in Theni District.
