Theni district
Theni district lies in the west of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Like much of rural Tamil Nadu, Theni district is predominantly agricultural. There is some light industry, mostly textiles and food processing, but not yet the large-scale industrialisation taking place in parts of India.
The people we work with live in villages, few own land, and most depend on seasonal casual farm work for their livelihood. Over the last 30 years we’ve seen changes: better roads, paved streets, more buses and tractors, better government health services, improved sanitation and water supply. We’ve also seen the advent of HIV and multi-drug resistant TB.
India is a country in the midst of change. Much of traditional India remains entrenched. But there are powerful forces – industrialisation, government development efforts, television, the growth of a well-educated middle class – working for change. Amid this ferment, VST and its partners are focused on the rights and wellbeing of the most disadvantaged.
