On March 8th 2024 the TSPI women’s federation led a march through the streets of Theni. The focus of the meeting was to address violence against women.
Women in rural India have suffered discrimination for centuries and, until recently have had no way to combat it. Our partners and the women’s federation has made great improvements in the past few decades to challenge and change this practice. The women showed that they are simply not going to put up with violence against women any longer and made that fact clearly known to all the inhabitants of the district capital in a wonderful display of solidarity and dignity.
A number of distinguished people spoke at the event including NGO leaders and government officials. We had a special appearance from R D Lakshmi, a leading advocate for women’s rights at the Chennai High Court who gave a passionate speech saying that she could be personally approached for support in taking cases of violence against women to court. It was an impressive meeting, interspersed with dancing and a positive atmosphere throughout.
